CREATE A TROPICAL FLOWER CROWN OR COCONUT LEAF HAT

  • Learn how to make a gorgeous flower crown from local flowers
  • Practice time-honored weaving techniques

From welcome flowers presented upon arrival, to Tahitians wearing at least one flower everyday behind their ear or in their hair, to the “language of flowers” that expresses marital status, flowers are a part of daily life and legend and lore on the islands of Tahiti. Profusely flowering plants, including the sweet-smelling “Tiare Tahiti,” are plentiful on the islands and are commonly used to craft a “hei” or floral crown. Led by savvy local staff, guests will learn how to use only long leaves to braid a base of the crown before decorating it with blossoms such as tiare and hibiscus. Tahitians are master weavers and thanks to the hotel’s guests can also learn how to make a hat from the inner leaves of coconut trees. These brimmed hats are made using fresh green leaves that dry and harden into a lighter colored hat that can be worn for years to come.

Located at Conrad Bora Bora Nui, on the beach in front of the hotel. Arrangements for lessons can be made via the concierge.

SING AN ISLAND SONG

  • Learn the story behind Polynesia’s most iconic instrument
  • Take a ukelele lesson with Conrad’s own on-site musicians
  • item 3

The diminutive ukelele has a long history—grid-skipping from tropical Madeira off the coast of Portugal to the Hawaiian islands and the South Pacific. Since then, the soothing plinkity-plink of this four-string instrument has become synonymous with the sounds of Polynesia. Lately there’s been an uptick in popularity for this seemingly kitschy instrument; its sweetness is undeniable and its approachability makes it the ideal instrument to learn on vacation. Perfect your beach-bum persona by learning a little ditty to strum under a palm tree. (The soundtrack to South Pacific, perhaps?) The Conrad’s on-site minstrels Maui and Wilson provide the instruments, tutorials, and tunes.
