MONKEY ABOUT IN UBUD

  • Hike to a field-to-table lunch
  • Play with long-tailed monkeys
  • End the day with a tasting menu dinner

Warung Bodag Maliah (locally known as Sari Organic) is not your usual café, but rather an immersive field-to-table experience. And it starts with a 20-minute appetite-stirring tromp through terraced rice fields up to the alang-alang roofed restaurant overlooking paddies and palm trees. Diners are encouraged to pluck produce from the on-site farm that will wind up in your gado gado salad of bright vegetables or a vegetarian version of nasi campur. Continuing on the nature-loving theme, make your next stop the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary to play with Balinese long-tailed monkeys. There are three temples on-site, but the 600 impish macaques scampering around this 30-acre forest are scene-stealers. Buy bananas (20,000 or 50,000 rupiah per bunch) and watch them scuttle over for a treat. Finally, emerge from the wilds for a highly civilized five or seven course dinner (go all in with the wine pairing) at Locavore. The European leaning menu with a local accent changes monthly, but don’t pass on any dish made with the tender, full-flavored Baturiti duck from Central Bali. The artful mash-up of Western and Eastern flavors is creatively presented —a rock oyster shell here or smoked hay there—in an understated dining room.
Hire a car and driver for the day. Ubud is roughly an hour’s drive away. Sari Organic is just outside central Ubud and the Ubud Monkey Forest is a 15-minute ride from there. Locavore is a five-minute trip from the Ubud Monkey Forest.

EAT, PRAY, LOVE

  • Practice yoga in a sanctuary for mind and body
  • Fuel up with Ayurvedic and raw vegan dishes
  • Take a peaceful tour of a working rice field

Rebalance chakras at the Yoga Barn, the open-air sanctuary to stretching (and soul mending) at the heart of Elizabeth Gilbert’s travel memoir Eat, Pray, Love. Drop in for Hatha, Vinyasa, or a Tibetan singing bowl meditation session—a Yin yoga class with Denise Payne will definitely wring out any travel-induced tensions. Soul sated, feed a grumbling stomach at the on-site Garden Kafe, Ubud’s first raw food restaurant. Protein-rich breakfast bowls, healing Ayurvedic dishes, vegan desserts, and refreshing green juices (get all your vitamins for the day in a single Vegetable Haven) and smoothies make up the menu. Following lunch, continue north to Tegalalang for a meditative walk through the working rice terraces. To better understand the intricate practice of subak (a traditional co-op system of Balinese irrigation), flag a guide down (bargaining is recommended and don’t pay less than 50,000 rupiah) before wandering into the fields. DIY or with a guide, linger on the first terrace to soak up the patchwork of paddy plots in a wave of green hues. Carry a small change “donation” to tip the working farmers.
Hire a driver to take you to Ubud, roughly an hour north of the hotel. The Tegalalang rice terraces are a 30-minute trip from central Ubud.

DIY BEACH CLUB CRAWL

  • Brunch with the beautiful people
  • Up your accessories game at a chic boutique
  • Ride out into the sunset by catching waves

Skip right past the velvet ropes and stage your own progressive beach-club party (sans the crowds) in Seminyak. Kick things off mid-morning over brunch at the original Ku De Ta with its iconic red sun umbrellas and beach-facing day beds. The smoked salmon platter pairs well with a citrusy KDT mojito. The day is young, so stroll 15 minutes north to Potato Head Beach Club with its sexy swim-up bar, poolside daybeds, and uninterrupted ocean views. Snag a daybed ($500,000 rupiah minimum spend) and sip pistachio rockmelon martinis and nibble on glazed short ribs. Detour to the on-site Escalier boutique for daring beachwear by KS Swim, vintage sunglasses from Wildfox, and Sejauh’s hand-screened sarongs. Next, take your new shades for a spin at La Laguna Beach Bar and tapas restaurant, a gypsy-cool clutch of antique caravans with vintage decor. Wind down for the day at Batu Bolong’s Old Man’s, a laid-back beer garden where wave riders pop in from the beach for a burger and cold brew. Grab a board yourself (rentals from 70,000 rupiah) and hang to the right side of the break for gentle waves or paddle out with the pros.
Hire a taxi to take you the 40-minute trip to Seminyak.

SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP

  • Fuel up with an Aussie-style brunch
  • Shop Bali’s best boutiques
  • Revive post-spending spree with a massage

Need a break from the sun? Grab your tote bags and head to Seminyak for a restorative day of retail therapy along Jalan Laksmana Oberoi. Fuel up with a hearty Aussie-style brunch (don’t skip the corn fritters) and a flat white coffee, of course, at the Corner House. Begin browsing at Magali Pascal, a Paris-meets-Bali boutique; if you indulge in only one piece make it the Bourgeois Bohème frock. Romantics will swoon over Lulu Yasmine’s slinky silk dresses, hand-beaded pieces, and limited-edition print maxi dresses. Slip into a pair of all-the-rage gladiator sandals—or any of the gorgeous footwear with traditional Indonesian Kerawang embroidery—at Uma and Leopold. Add pop to your wardrobe at This is a Love Song (Katy Perry is a fan). If you’ve not lost shopping steam, explore Seminyak Village. This two-story glass and steel mall houses big names like Farah Khan, MC2 Saint Barth, Ashley Isham, and Shakuhachi. Finally, put your feet up at Spring Spa. Opt for their Spring Massage (250,000 rupiah) which focuses on easing tensions in the legs and arms—perfect for the exhausted shopper.
Hire a taxi to take you down to Seminyak, a 40-minute drive away. Catch a return taxi anywhere along the main road, but be sure to use one with a meter.

STEP OUT ON THE TOWN

  • Taste a new twist on Indonesian food
  • Visit Brazil by way of a bar
  • Experience the local club scene

Envelope-pushing restaurants are transforming Bali’s dining scene. At Republik 45, traditional street food is elevated with choice ingredients and served in a romantic garden setting. Clever twists on Indonesian standards include tuna satay and tempe with fresh asparagus, and there’s no shying away from sambal spiciness. Their weekend pop-up, Pasar Malam, turns out a more limited (yet no less enticing) menu with a dessert buffet of bite-sized kuehs in a rainbow of hues. After dinner, stroll 10 minutes to the Brazilian-inspired La Favela bar—the massive Christ the Redeemer statue is impossible to overlook. Music can be hit-or-miss, but the La Favela Breeze (vodka with peach liqueur and dragonfruit) is a solid pre-club cocktail. Just before midnight, make tracks to Jenja (250,000 rupiah entry fee which includes one drink) where big-name DJs attract Bali’s glam set. The slick club is split into two levels (R&B grooves upstairs and house and techno beats down below), but order drinks upstairs where there’s a bit more elbow room. Be sure to dress up; those in shorts and flip-flops will not make it beyond the velvet rope.
Hire a taxi to Seminyak, a 40-minute drive away. Catch a return taxi anywhere along the main road, but be sure to use one with a meter.
